ACCEPTING MY ANXIETY

Updated: Mar 3

By Meesha Kamali

I am far too familiar with anxiety and have been affected by it for as long as I remember. It’s not easy and coming to a place where I can accept it has been quite empowering. When people meet me, they rarely believe that this bubbly, positive woman in front of them hits some very low lows regularly. I learned to put on a mask pretty well- not necessarily a good thing! This fast-paced world that we live in requires us to carry ourselves with a level of strength that sometimes feels too difficult to walk with. Anxiety makes you feel trapped in your own body with nowhere to go and no one to fix it. Terrible feeling- really.

“Just because someone carries it well doesn’t mean it’s not heavy.” – Unknown.

MAGIC HAPPENS IN THE UNKNOWN

As the years passed, I see life differently- a journey sprinkled with both happiness and worries. I have acknowledged that each day brings wonders of its own and that I must remain gentle with myself in the process. When facing the fear of the unknown, I try to look at it through a more positive lens. To me, ‘the unknown’ is also the field in which magic can happen; this often takes the edge off and springs me into my faith that this moment is as it should be.

Just as people don’t always understand my happiness, I have realized that not everyone will comprehend my worries either. That said, a listening ear helps immensely, and professionals positively impact how we sort those racing thoughts. Ultimately I am on a continuous path of having more compassion towards myself, questioning myself less, accepting and honouring my feelings more. By doing this, I feel that I take back a lot of my power from the anxiety that often hovers over me.

CINDERELLA LIKELY HAD STRUGGLES

With the seeds planted in our tiny minds as kids, we somehow subconsciously strive for perfect fairy tales, but real life is often far from that. Come to think of it, after Cinderella left her unkind and unloving home, married her charming Prince, and credits rolled, she likely had struggles that we never saw. Being realistic and embracing life for all it is, with all its ups and downs, makes the ride a lot more enjoyable.

There are various helpful, loving sources at the tip of our fingertips and in our communities where we can get help. Accept your #anxiety and take your power back. For now, here is a little helpful grounding tool from me to you. I know what you’re thinking… This doesn’t work! When our minds are racing, we want an immediate fix, and we want it right away. But take it from me; slowing down and bringing yourself to the present moment can calm the chaos. Try it!
